Signal sheets / Contract winners

Edition 1 comingSignal sheet 1

Contract winners

The signal: The firm won a federal contract or a provincial tender in the latest published quarter. Federal awards are published up to three months late, so every row shows the award date.

Why it matters: a firm that just won a contract has to buy materials, hire and carry costs for 30 to 90 days before it is paid — and often needs a performance bond and new insurance to start.

For: invoice factoring and purchase-order lenders · supply-chain finance · surety and insurance brokers · equipment dealers and lessors.

    What’s in each row

The same columns as our industry lists, plus five that describe the signal.

    ColumnWhat it means
Company nameThe name the firm trades under.
Legal nameThe name on the business registry, written exactly as the registry has it (often in capitals).
    StreetStreet address.
    CityTown or city.
    ProvinceProvince code.
    Postal codePostal code.
    PhoneThe firm's main business phone.
Second phoneAnother business phone the firm publishes (for example on its own website).
WebsiteThe firm's own website, checked: it loaded and named the firm or showed its phone. A Facebook, directory or job-board page is never put here.
Industry codeThe NAICS industry code this file covers (the same code the StatCan counts use).
IndustryThe industry name for the code above.
    FacebookThe firm's Facebook page.
    LinkedInThe firm's LinkedIn page.
    InstagramThe firm's Instagram account.
Owner nameThe owner or principal, written in normal capitals (Mc, Mac and O' names included).
Owner titleThe owner's title, as the source gives it.
Owner name sourceRegistry = from the provincial business registry. Two sources = two independent sources agree. One source = one trusted source (for example the firm's own website or a business directory) — confirm on the call.
Owner emailThe owner's own address, where one was found and the mailbox accepts mail.
Owner LinkedInThe owner's own LinkedIn profile.
Business emailThe firm's email. Only addresses a mailbox check found deliverable are included.
Email typeOwner (the owner's own address) · Named person (a named staff member) · General inbox (info@, office@ …).
Email last checked deliverableThe date a mailbox check last found the business email deliverable. Deliverable means the mailbox accepts mail — not who reads it.
Founding yearThe earliest year the firm states it began (its own website), else the registry year.
Incorporation yearThe year the firm's current company was registered. It can be later than the founding year (an amalgamation re-dates it).
Legal structureAs the registry records it (Limited Company, Sole Proprietorship, …).
    Employees (estimated band)Estimate. A size band (1 to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 19 …) from a commercial business directory's estimate. It is the vendor's estimate, not a head count.
Revenue (estimated range)Estimate. A modelled range, not a reported figure: Statistics Canada / ISED average revenue per employee for this industry in this province, times the firm's estimated staff. Where the firm's own public contracts and payments are larger, the range is raised to that figure and says so. 'not applicable' marks a branch of a larger group, where a local figure would mislead. Where we hold no staff estimate the range is left blank — we do not guess a size.
Google reviewsThe number of reviews on the firm's Google listing, when it was read.
Owner likely 55+Estimate. 'yes' by a fixed rule: the firm is 25+ years old and the same owner has been in place since it was registered (for example a sole proprietorship registered 25+ years ago), or the owner's name is in the firm's name on a 25+ year old firm. 'no' where the evidence points the other way. Blank where the rule cannot tell — that is most firms, and it is not a 'no'.
Federal contracts ($)Federal contract dollars matched to the firm by name (public award records).
Provincial tenders ($)Provincial tender awards matched to the firm by name (public award records).
Grants ($)Federal grant and contribution dollars matched to the firm by name.
Latest award dateThe date of the firm's most recent public contract, tender or grant.
Proof the firm is openThe evidence that the firm is trading now: a dated record from a source we tested.
Proof dateThe date that evidence was checked or dated.
How the trade was confirmedThe evidence that the firm does this kind of work.
Registry statusThe firm's record on the business registry, and when it was checked. Blank = no registry record was matched (common for owner-operators trading under their own name).
New since last edition'yes' when the firm was not in the previous edition. Blank on the first edition.
Signal typeThe kind of signal that put the firm on this sheet (here: a contract or tender).
Signal dateThe date of the signal — for an award, the award date in the public record.
Signal sourceThe public record the signal was taken from, by name.
AmountThe dollar amount in the public record, where one is published.
Awarding bodyThe department, agency or government that made the award.

    Questions

    What format?

An Excel file with two sheets: the firms, and a README explaining every column.

    How fresh?

Each edition lists the signals published since the last one.

Can I get only my province?

    Yes.

Can my whole team use it?

Yes, anyone in your company. You can’t resell it.

How many buyers get the same sheet?

At most five of the same type, so a sheet doesn’t go to every lender in the country.
